The Japanese name comes from the fact that the color and shape of the lip resemble a bell cricket. New shoots grow from the sides of the pseudobulb, producing two leaves, and from May to July, a flower stalk 15-30 cm tall bears a cluster of more than 10 flowers. The flower is about 15 mm in diameter. The lip is conspicuous, reddish purple, translucent, flat, and about 12-18 mm long. It is found from Hokkaido to Kyushu and Korea. It is sometimes cultivated for decorative purposes.
