Generally, it is a plain weave fabric with some weft ribbing, using single yarns of about 40 count. A similar fabric is broadcloth, but it often uses two-ply yarns of 60 count or more, and is a higher quality product than poplin. For sales purposes, it is better to call it broadcloth than poplin, so some labels do not match the content and quality. In the 16th century, weft-ribbed silk fabric was made in Avignon, France, and it is said to have been named poplin because Avignon was under the jurisdiction of the Pope at the time. The fabric is often made of cotton, but can also be made from wool, silk, and synthetic fibers, and is often used for shirts and blouses.
