Cladocera have a high reproductive capacity, so they appear in large numbers as plankton in lakes and ponds, and are important as a major natural food source for fish and other creatures. For this reason, fertilization has long been used in fish farming ponds for carp, goldfish, and other fish, to artificially generate and breed large numbers of daphnia.
