(Brother) Jacob Ludwig Carl 1785.1.4. Hanau - 1863.9.20. Berlin (Younger brother) Wilhelm Carl 24th February 1786, Hanau - 16th December 1859, Berlin Both brothers were German philologists and linguists. They had close ties to the Heidelberg Romantics, and were inspired by Av. Arnim and C. Brentano. Together they published Children's and Household Tales (1812-15) and German Legends (16-18). In 1830, the elder brother became a professor at the University of Göttingen, while the younger brother became a librarian and later a professor, but resigned after being implicated in the Seven Professors Affair at the university. In 1841, they moved to Berlin, where they both became professors at the university and stayed together for the rest of their lives. In 1838, they began compiling the enormous German Dictionary (1952-1961). The elder brother Jacob also showed talent in the field of linguistics, discovering the phonological laws that govern European languages, known as Grimm's Law. Although this was corrected by later scholars, it was a groundbreaking work, along with Deutsche Grammatik (German Grammar) (4 volumes, 1819-37) and Geschichte der deutschen Sprache (History of the German Language) (48).
