American composer. Born in Massachusetts to an Armenian father and a Scottish mother. His real name was Alan Banes Chakhmakhjian. He graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music. He studied the traditional music of his own roots in Armenia, as well as Japan and India, and created his own unique music using these as material. His representative works include the symphonies "The Mysterious Mountain" and "Echmiadzin," as well as the orchestral works "Meditation of Zeami," "Ukiyo," and "And God Created the Great Whale."
