A Bantu-speaking ethnic group living in the southern part of the central highlands of Kenya. They call themselves Gekoyo or Agekoyo. With a population of about 5 million, they are the largest ethnic group in Kenya, having produced J. Kenyatta, the first president. They practice intensive agriculture and produce millet, potatoes, beans, coffee, corn, etc. The regional unit is a patrilineal kinship group based on a polygamous composite family, but there are also nine clans and numerous lineages. In the past, linear age groups supported regional political, military, and religious organizations. They are most closely related to the neighboring Kamba and Masai, but they fought cattle raids. In the 1950s, they resisted the British colonial government as the core of the Mau Mau. They believe in a creator god and practice ancestor worship.
