...The former is often seen when fine-grained rocks such as slate, which do not contain much hard and brittle layers such as sandstone (called competent layers), are deformed at medium depths, as described below, and generally results in cleavage folding. The folding units in this case are rock fragments (called microlithons) several tens to several hundreds of micrometers thick, bounded by slate cleavages (axial cleavages) that are almost parallel to the folding axis. Imagine pushing a stack of cards vertically with your finger.
