When molten metal is poured into a mold, crystal nuclei form on the mold surface and grow toward the inside where the crystals are not yet solidified. As a result, the crystal grains that form in the ingot are called columnar crystals. In contrast, crystal grains with an isotropic shape that are observed over the entire surface of the ingot are called equiaxed crystals.
