Columnar crystallite

When molten metal is poured into a mold, crystal nuclei form on the mold surface and grow toward the inside where the crystals are not yet solidified. As a result, the crystal grains that form in the ingot are called columnar crystals. In contrast, crystal grains with an isotropic shape that are observed over the entire surface of the ingot are called equiaxed crystals. 溶融金属を鋳型内に注入すると，鋳型表面で結晶核が生成し，結晶がまだ固まらない内部に向って成長する。その結果，鋳塊にできる柱状の形態をした結晶粒が柱状晶である。これに対し，鋳塊全面にわたって等方的な形態をした結晶粒が観察されるのが，等軸晶である。
