Abbreviation: Boo. A northern constellation. Its scientific name comes from the Greek boōtēs, meaning "cattle driving," but in the starry sky it is depicted as chasing a big bear and a little bear with two hunting dogs. The alpha star, Arcturus, is a golden bright star, and its name comes from the Greek meaning "guardian of the bears." The entire constellation is shaped like a long, thin bow rising from this star, but when it rises in the eastern sky it lies sideways, and when it sets in the western sky it stands upright, so Homer famously sang "Boeotes, slow to set" in the Odyssey.

略号Boo。北天の星座。学名は〈牛追い〉の意味のギリシア語boōtēsによるが，星空では2匹の猟犬を従えて大熊，小熊を追う形になる。α星のアークトゥルスは金色の輝星で，この名は〈熊の番人〉という意味のギリシア語に由来する。星座全体はこの星から立ち上る細長いのしの形であるが，東空をのぼるときは横に倒れた姿勢に，西空に沈むときは縦の姿勢になるのでホメロスが《オデュッセイア》の中で〈沈むにおそきボオテス〉と歌ったのは有名である。
