Yabe [village] - Yabe

Japanese: 矢部[村] - やべ

A village in Yame County at the southern tip of Fukuoka Prefecture. Population 1942 (1995). It borders Oita Prefecture to the east, separated by mountains such as Shakagatake (1231m), and Kumamoto Prefecture to the south, separated by Kunimiyama (1018m). The Yabe River flows northwest through the center of the village, and the village is located in the upper reaches of the river. Nearly 90% of the village is covered by forests, and forestry is the main industry. Cedar plantations are particularly popular, and the village is widely known as a cutting forest. Taking advantage of the characteristics of the highland, the cultivation of flowering trees and temperate vegetables is thriving, and the village also produces specialty products such as tea and wasabi. There is a shrine dedicated to Yametsuhime, who is said to be the origin of the place name Yame, and the tomb of Prince Yoshinari, the Seisei Shogun of the Nanboku-cho period.

福岡県南端，八女（やめ）郡の村。人口1942(1995)。東は釈迦ヶ岳(1231m)などの山々を境に大分県に，南は国見山(1018m)を境に熊本県に接する。中央部を矢部川が北西流し，その最上流域にあたる。山林が村域の90％近くを占め，林業が基幹産業となっている。特に杉の植林がすすめられ，挿木造林地として広く知られる。高冷地の特性を生かして花木，抑制野菜の栽培が盛んで，茶，ワサビなどの特産もある。八女という地名の起源という八女津媛（やめつひめ）を祭る神社や南北朝時代の征西将軍良成（よしなり）親王の陵墓がある。
