A town in the Côte d'Or department in central-eastern France. It is located about 40 km south-southwest of Dijon, at the eastern foot of the Côte d'Or hills known as the "Golden Roofs". It has been the center of Burgundy wine production since Gallo-Roman times, and has a vocational training center for grape growing and wine production. The most distinctive building is the Beaune Hospitaller (1443), with its Flemish-style painted tile roof, and the famous altarpiece "The Last Judgment" by Rogier van der Weyden. The Romanesque Notre-Dame Cathedral (12th century) has a collection of tapestries, the Church of Saint Nicholas, and the castle of the Duke of Burgundy, which is now a wine museum. Part of the circular town is still surrounded by medieval walls. Every November, a wine festival called "Three Glorious Days" is held, attracting many tourists. In 2015, it was registered as a World Heritage Site along with Dijon as a wine-producing region (→Burgundy). Population: 21,300 (2005 estimate).BeaunePlease see the Anaba page.
