...The river forms an alluvial fan south from Kamigamo's Hiiragi-no, which is the outlet for the Kyoto Basin, and much of the river water flows underground and becomes the source of water for wells in Kyoto city. Kamogawara is famous for its purification ceremonies, battlefields, and execution sites, but from the end of the Middle Ages to the early modern period it became a public square where common people gathered, and entertainment districts lined with theaters and show booths formed in Shijogawara and Gojogawara. This river has been used since ancient times to transport timber, firewood, and charcoal, but because the water volume is low during peacetime, the Takase River was excavated south of Ichinofunairi, south of Nijo Street, on the west bank during the Keicho period (1596-1615), and was used for water transportation until the early Meiji period. ...

…京都盆地への流出口にあたる上賀茂の柊野（ひいらぎの）から南へ扇状地をつくり，河水の多くは伏流して京都市街の井戸の水源となっている。鴨河原はみそぎ祓（はらい）の神事や合戦場，処刑場として著名であるが，中世末から近世にかけては庶民の集まる広場となり，芝居･見世物小屋が並ぶ歓楽街が四条河原，五条河原に形成された。この河川は古代から木材，薪炭などの輸送に利用されていたが，平時は水量が少ないため慶長年間(1596‐1615)西岸の二条通り南の一之船入以南に高瀬川が掘削され，明治前期まで水運に利用された。…
