Pergamon Museum - Pergamon Museum (English name)

Pergamon Museum - Pergamon Museum (English name)

This is a national art museum in Berlin. It is located on an island in the River Spree, commonly known as Museum Island, Museumsinsel. Other museums on the island include the Bode Museum (formerly the Kaiser-Friedrich Museum), the National Gallery, and its Old Museum, but this museum is the central presence among them. It was completed as the main building of the Berlin State Gallery in 1830, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Gallery of the former Kingdom of Prussia. The Pergamon Museum is the common name for this building, which includes the Museum of Near and Middle Eastern Art, the Museum of Greek and Roman Antiquities, the Museum of Islamic Art, the Museum of East Asian Art, and the Ethnography Museum. After Berlin was divided into East and West after World War II, some of the evacuated works were moved to the Dahlem Museum of Art and Charlottenburg Palace in the west, but the main collection remained.

This is one of the world's leading art museums, with a collection of masterpieces such as art and archaeological remains from the Ancient Orient, ancient Greece, and Rome. Inside the museum, large-scale excavated remains are restored, including the Babylonian Ishtar Gate (6th century BC) made of glazed bricks, and the Great Altar of the Temple of Zeus in Pergamon, with its representative sculptures of the Hellenistic period, from which the museum is named.

[Noriko Minato]

After the reunification of East and West Germany, Berlin's national museums were reorganized and consolidated, and as of 2009, the Pergamon Museum houses the Museum of Islamic Art and the Orient Museum, as well as part of the classical antiquity collection, including Greek and Roman sculptures.
