Bird's Eyes

Japanese: 鳥目 - ちょうもく

〘Noun〙 Another name for money (zeni) . Also, another name for money in general. Until the Edo period, coins had round holes and were named after the resemblance of a bird's eye. It is said that the name was transferred from China, where the coin was commonly called "goose eye " for a similar meaning. *Kyo-ka/Kingen Wakashu (around 1492-1501) "The bird's eye is particularly troubled by this, and people's hearts are troubled."

〘名〙銭(ぜに)の異称。また、一般に金銭の異称。江戸時代までの銭貨は円形方孔のもので、鳥の目に似ているとしての名。中国で同様の意味から「鵝眼(ががん)」と俗称されているのが移って来て付けられたものといわれる。※狂歌・金言和歌集（1492‐1501頃）「ことさら鳥目につけて、人々のこころをなやまし」
