Vidie named this the aneroid barometer, from the Greek anēros, which means "not liquid," in contrast to the mercury barometer. This type of elastic pressure gauge was developed into the Bourdon tube pressure gauge, which was invented independently by M. Schinz and Eugéne Bourdon (1808-84) in 1849.
