An old city in the eastern part of Fukue Island in the Goto Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It also includes the surrounding islands such as Kabashima and the Men-Tono Islands. Fukue, the center of the city, was the former castle town of the Goto clan and has long been the administrative and economic center of the archipelago. Agriculture, mainly tobacco, sericulture, and beef cattle, accounts for a large proportion of the city's production. Fishing is thriving along the coast and seafood processing is also carried out, but in recent years the number of people employed in the fishing industry has decreased and the population has been aging. Goto dried squid is a local specialty. Fukue Airport was expanded in 1988 and now accommodates jet planes. High-speed ferries also operate on the sea route. In August 2004, it merged with Tomie Town, Tamanoura Town, Miiraku Town, Kishuku Town, and Naru Town in Minamimatsuura County to form Goto City. Area: 158.12 km2 . Population: 27,616 (2003).
