From the Ejima Incident

...This was a morals disturbance incident that occurred in the inner palace of Edo Castle in 1714 (4th year of the Shōtoku era). On the way back from visiting Kan'ei-ji and Zojō-ji temples on behalf of the shogun Tokugawa Ietsugu, Ejima (also written as Ejima) and Miyaji, who served Gekkoin, the mother of the shogun Tokugawa Ietsugu, were discovered to have stopped by the Yamamura Chōtayu Theatre in Kobiki-chō, entertaining themselves in the box seats and at the residence of the theatre owner before returning to the castle. After a trial at the Hyojōsho, Ejima was sentenced to eternal life, but at Gekkoin's request, he was entrusted to Kiyokazu Naito, lord of Takato Castle in Ina, Shinshu (33,000 koku), and exiled to Takato. Ejima's brothers and associates were implicated in this incident and sentenced to death, exile, or severe exile, and Yamamura Chōtayu, Ikushima Shingoro, and others who entertained them, were also exiled.
