Ise Dance - Iseodori

Japanese:
Ise Dance - Iseodori

Furyu-odori (elegant dance) was popular in the early modern period in conjunction with the faith in Ise Shrine. The history of the popularity of Ise Shrine among the common people dates back to records from 934 (Shohei 4), but in 1614 (Keicho 19), rumors spread that the great shrine had been transferred to Nogamiyama, and Ise-odori suddenly became popular throughout the country. This explosive popularity led to a ban being issued the following year. The Ise-odori dance that was presented to Shogun Iemitsu by the Bishu Tokugawa family in 1635 (Kan'ei 12) was a group dance performed by people wearing kosode (short sleeves) with a crimson lining, a rope belt made of scarlet crepe with gold gauze, and a bleached headband, holding silver fans with a Japanese flag on them, and included lyrics such as "Where is this dance from? Crossing Matsuzaka, the Ise-odori." The Ise Dance was popular as a dance to send off the gods of Ise to various provinces until the start of the Omikae pilgrimage in 1650 (Keian 3). It is still performed today in Niijima in the Izu Islands and Yawatahama City in Ehime Prefecture.
