...Its founder was Prince Sonen, whose father was Emperor Fushimi, a skilled calligrapher. The name comes from the fact that the prince lived at Shoren-in Temple, a temple in Awataguchi, Kyoto, and it is also called the Awataguchi school or the Sonen school. The prince created a new and excellent style of calligraphy that added a new touch of Zhang Jizhi from the Song dynasty in China to the ancient style of the Sesonji school, but the descendants of the school came to be based exclusively on the Hojun style, which suited the tastes of the time and therefore also became vulgar. ...
