Wichert
German seismologist. Professor at the University of Göttingen in 1905. He developed the theory of the seismometer, invented the Wichert seismometer, and devised a method to determine the speed of seismic waves inside the Earth from the travel-time curve of seismic waves, becoming a pioneer in the study of the Earth's internal structure.

Wichert

German novelist. His works are based on a reverence for nature in his native East Prussia. He wrote long novels such as "Forest of the Dead" (1939), which chronicled his experience of living in a concentration camp for two months, "A Simple Life" (1939), and "The Children of the Yellow Mines," as well as many children's stories and essays.

ドイツの小説家。出身地東プロイセンの自然への畏敬(いけい)が作品の基調をなし,2ヵ月の強制収容所生活体験の記録《死者の森》や《単純な生活》(1939年),《イエローミンの子ら》などの長編のほか,多くの童話や随筆を残している。
