A river that originates in central New York State, USA, flows south, turns southeast near Rome, passes through Utica and Schenectady, and joins the Hudson River at Cohoes. Its total length is about 240 km. The Mohawk Valley was fertile land and was inhabited by the Mohawk Indians, but it was also an important transportation route from the Atlantic coast to the Great Lakes, and there were many battles between white settlers and Indians. The Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, runs parallel to the Mohawk River from Rome. [Kanno Mineaki] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
