Brouwer, Hendrick
[Born] 1581.4.
Died: August 7, 1643. Chief of the Chilean Dutch trading post at Hirado, later Governor-General of the East Indies. In 1606, he traveled to Java and served in Banda, Makassar, and Bantam. He arrived at the Hirado trading post in August 1612, and traveled to Sunpu to present a letter of thanks to Tokugawa Ieyasu for permission to trade. Upon returning to Hirado with the reply and red seal, he became Chief of the trading post in place of J. Specs, a position he held until 1614. After returning to Japan, he negotiated with Britain as a director of the East India Company, but served as Governor-General in the East Indies again from 1632 to 1636. After returning to Japan, he became Governor-General of the West Indies, and was killed in battle against the Spanish.

Brouwer, Adriaen

Born: 1605/1606 Oudenaarde
Died January 1638. Antwerp. A Flemish painter. He went to Haarlem around 1621 and studied under F. Hals, after which he is said to have led a dissolute life. He was imprisoned in Antwerp as a political prisoner, but was released in September 1633 and settled there. Most of his works are genre paintings depicting everyday life, many of which are small. His major works include "Peasants Drinking" (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam) and "Playing Cards" (Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp).

Brouwer, Luitzen Egbertus Jan

Born: 27th February 1881 in Auffercy
[Died] December 2, 1966. Blaricum Dutch mathematician. Founder of intuitionism in mathematics. He studied mathematics at the University of Amsterdam until 1904, and became a professor there in 1912. He is known for his achievements in topology and mathematical foundations. In the former, he proved the fixed point theorem, and in the latter, he took the position that the unlimited use of the law of the excluded middle in mathematical proofs was prohibited, and he reconstructed mathematical theory.

オランダの平戸商館長,のち東インド総督。 1606年ジャワ島に渡り,バンダ,マカッサル,バンタンの各地に勤務,12年8月平戸商館に来着,駿府におもむき徳川家康に国書を呈して通商許可を謝し,その返書と朱印状を受けて平戸に戻ると,J.スペックスに代って商館長となって 14年まで在勤した。帰国して東インド会社理事として対イギリス折衝にあたったが,32~36年再度東インドにあって総督をつとめ,帰国するとさらに西インド総督となり,スペイン軍と戦って戦死。

フランドルの画家。 1621年頃ハールレムに行き,F.ハルスに師事し,その後放縦な生活をおくったといわれる。アントウェルペンでは政治犯として獄舎につながれたが,33年9月に釈放され,以後は同地に定住。作品の大部分は日常生活を描写した風俗画で,小品が多い。主要作品は『酒盛りする百姓たち』 (アムステルダム国立美術館) ,『トランプ遊び』 (アントウェルペン王立美術館) 。

オランダの数学者。数学における直観主義の創始者。 1904年までアムステルダム大学で数学を学び,12年同大学教授となる。位相数学と数学基礎論に業績がある。前者では不動点定理を証明し,後者では数学的証明において排中律の無制限の使用を禁ずる立場に立ち,数学理論の再構成を行なった。
