Komarno (English spelling)

Komarno (English spelling)
Komorn in German, Komárom in Hungarian. A city in the southern tip of Slovakia. Located at the confluence of the Danube and the Vácha River, it faces the Hungarian border. It is connected to the Hungarian side by a bridge, making it an important location for rail and road transport. Since the construction of a fortress in the 12th century, it developed on both sides of the Danube and was a strategic point in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the collapse of the empire, the area on the north bank of the Danube became Czechoslovakia under the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, but about 600,000 Hungarians were left behind as a minority in southern Slovakia, so it was ceded to Hungary along with the rest of southern Slovakia after the Munich Agreement in 1938. In 1945, the area on the north bank was returned to Czechoslovakia. The Hungarian issue remains a concern, and it has been decided that a higher education institution for Hungarians will be established in Komárno. Machinery industries such as shipbuilding have developed. Population: 37,370 (1991 estimate).
