...He resisted the French army as a national hero in the early colonial period, but was defeated in 1898 and exiled to Gabon. Meanwhile, Hadji Umar of the Tukulor Empire, which rose to power with its base in Dingirae in the north-central part of Guinea, declared Islamic holy war (jihad) and conquered the kingdoms of Kaarta, Segou, and Massina. However, King Amadou, who succeeded Hadji Umar when he died in 1864, was deposed by the French army in 1892.
