A type of Kabuki kyogen. A general term for works with a "poisonous woman" as the protagonist who, despite being a woman, is a tomboyish blackmailer and murderer. In Kabuki, the role of a poisonous woman is called an "evil woman," so these plays are also called "evil woman stories." The origin of the "evil woman" is said to be in November 1792 (Kansei 4) at the Edo Kawarazakiza Theater, where Iwai Hanshiro IV played a prostitute named Mikazuki Osen, but it is suggestive that most of the evil women who live proactive lives as women come from brothels (such as brothels).
