Manzai Kyokashu - Manzai Kyokashu

Japanese:
Manzai Kyokashu - Manzai Kyokashu

A collection of kyoka poems (Senshu). Compiled by Yomono Akara (Shokusanjin). Published in 1783 (Tenmei 3). The title is a reference to New Year's Mikawa Banzai and Senzai Wakashu. The collection is ingeniously based on the divisions and arrangement of the 17 volumes of Senzaishu, and includes over 230 kyoka poems from ancient times to the present. It also features works by a wide variety of people from the literary world, kabuki, entertainment, and pleasure quarters, which piqued public interest and created the momentum for the craze for Edo kyoka. The works of Akara, who was at the center of this group, were characterized by free and light-hearted tunes such as "I do not know in my heart who resents the morning glory, but the lush dew of lapis lazuli," which is in the spirit of Tang dynasty poetry, and "In the evening twilight as I walk through the night trade fair of Yoshiwara, the bell at the entrance to the palace blossoms like cherry blossoms," which glorify Edo life. These works overwhelmed Karakoromo Kisshu's "Kyoka Wakabashu," which was published at the same time, and marked a period of "Tenmei style," which continued with "Tokuwaka Gomanzaishu" and "Kyoka Saizōshū."
