Tortoise shells and animal bones used in bone divination, a type of fortune telling. There are ancient records of bone divination in Europe, Africa, North America, China, and other parts of the world, and in Mongolia, divination is still practiced today by heating sheep bones and looking at the cracks they form. In Japan, divination was practiced during the Yayoi period before Christ, as confirmed by divination bones excavated from ruins around the country, and the Chinese historical document Gishiwajinden states that divination was practiced in Japan in the 3rd century. During the Ritsuryo period from the 7th century onwards, it was held as a national festival. In January 2015, it was announced that divination bones from the late 3rd century to early 4th century (early Kofun period) had been discovered at the Makimuku ruins (a nationally designated historic site) in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture. The Makimuku ruins are considered a likely site for the Yamatai Kingdom, and this is the first time that divination bones have been excavated there.

占いの一種「骨卜」(こつぼく)に用いられる亀甲(きっこう)や獣骨などのこと。古くはヨーロッパ・アフリカ・北アメリカ・中国など世界各地に骨卜の記録があり、モンゴルでは現在も羊の骨を熱しそのヒビの入り方で見る占いが行われている。日本では紀元前の弥生時代に行われていたことが全国の遺跡から出土した卜骨により確認されており、中国の歴史資料「魏志倭人伝(ぎしわじんでん)」には、3世紀の日本で卜骨を行っていたとの記述がある。7世紀以降の律令時代には国の祭事として行われた。2015年1月、奈良県桜井市の「纒向(まきむく)遺跡」(国指定の史跡)で、3世紀後半～4世紀初め(古墳時代前期)の卜骨を発見したと発表された。纒向遺跡は邪馬台国の有力候補地とされ、ここで卜骨が出土したのは初めてのこと。
