A canal in the Netherlands. It connects Amsterdam with IJmuiden on the North Sea. It is 18.8 km long. It is 15.5 m deep and 170 m wide, and can accommodate ships of 80,000 tons. It is difficult to travel from Amsterdam to the open sea through the Zuiderzee (now the IJsselmeer) due to shallow waters and strong winds, so after the Noordhollands Kanaal (79 km long) connecting Amsterdam with Helder on the north coast was opened in 1824, people relied solely on this canal.
