A former town in Minamiazumi district, western Nagano prefecture. The main settlement, Hotaka, is in the center of the Matsumoto Basin and developed as a post town on the Itoigawa Highway (Chikuni Highway), with the Oito Line passing through. The town produces rice, vegetables, and flowers, and rainbow trout is farmed. Wasabi cultivation using spring water is also popular. To the west are the Northern Alps mountain ranges, including Jonen-dake and Otenjo-dake, and Nakabusa Onsen and Hotaka Shrine are located there. In October 2005, the town merged with Akashina-cho in Higashichikuma district, Toyoshina-cho in Minamiazumi district, Misato-mura, and Horigane-mura to become Azumino City. Area: 145.42 km2 . 長野県西部,南安曇(みなみあずみ)郡の旧町。主集落穂高は松本盆地の中央にあり,糸魚(いとい)川街道(千国(ちくに)街道)の宿場町として発達,大糸線が通じる。米,野菜,花卉(かき)を産し,ニジマスの養殖を行う。湧水を利用したワサビの栽培も盛ん。西は常念岳,大天井岳など北アルプス山岳部で,中房(なかぶさ)温泉,穂高神社がある。2005年10月,東筑摩郡明科町,南安曇郡豊科町,三郷村,堀金村と合併し市制,安曇野市となる。145.42km2。3万2003人(2003)。
