Zizhi Tongjian - Shijitsugan

A Chinese history book written by Sima Guang. 294 volumes. Editing began in 1065 under the orders of Emperor Yingzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, and it took 19 years to complete in 84 and present it to Emperor Shenzong. It was named to clarify the achievements of successive generations and to serve as a reference for the emperor's politics. It describes the historical facts of 1362 years from the 23rd year of King Weili of Zhou (403 BC) to the end of the Five Dynasties Later Zhou Dynasty (959) in chronological order, and covers a wide range of fields including politics, economics, military, geography, and academics. It is a representative Chinese history book, compiled from over 300 original sources based on his Confucian view of history and written in an excellent style. The historical value of the section on the Tang and Five Dynasties, including the fundamental historical sources that have already been lost, is great. The annotations created by Hu Sanxing, a man from the end of the Southern Song Dynasty and the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, over 30 years, further increase the value of this book.

中国の歴史書。司馬光(しばこう)著。294巻。北宋(ほくそう)の英宗の勅を受けて1065年編集に着手、19年をかけて84年に完成、神宗に献じた。歴代の事績を明らかにし、皇帝の政治の参考に供する意味で名づけられた。周の威烈王23年（前403）から五代後周(こうしゅう)末（959）まで1362年間の史実を編年体で記述し、政治、経済、軍事、地理、学術など広く各分野にわたっている。300を超える膨大な原史料から彼の儒教的歴史観に基づいて編集し、優れた文体で叙述され、中国の代表的な史書である。すでに散逸した根本史料を含む唐・五代の部分の史料的価値は大きい。南宋末元初の人胡三省(こさんせい)が30年を費やして作成した注釈は本書の価値をさらに高めている。
