Tomono Sozen - Tomono Sozen

Japanese: 友野宗善 - ともの・そうぜん
Tomono Sozen - Tomono Sozen
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A wealthy merchant and head of Sunpu (Shizuoka city) in the early Edo period. The Tomono clan, along with the Matsuki clan, were townspeople who had been purveyors to Sunpu since the Imagawa clan era. Munezen's name was Jirobei no jo, and he was active from this time through the time when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu was in Sunpu. When Ieyasu ruled Sunpu as Shogun, he carried out town divisions, and Munezen actively cooperated with this and gained his trust. In Sunpu, he came into contact with Ieyasu as a townsperson and head of the townspeople. Special concessions were given to Sunpu townspeople, and in 1609, the Nagasaki Itowarifu Nakama granted him a patent to distribute raw silk to Sunpu, and while they served the Shogun, they also played a role in extracting large concessions. His descendants were called Tomono Yozaemon for generations, and served as town elders. <References> "Shinfudoki of Sunpu Province," "Draft Shizuoka City History Compilation Materials" (held at Shizuoka Prefectural Central Library), "Shizuoka City History" Early Modern Period, Nakata Yasunao "Research on the History of Early Modern Foreign Relations"
