A British classical scholar. With the support of a patron and a scholarship, he went from Eton to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he served as a fellow for ten years from 1782. In 1792 he became professor of Greek at Cambridge, but in his later years he based himself in London. Following the example of R. Bentley, he devoted himself to a rigorous study of the phrasing and idiom of Attic classical tragedies, comedies, and prose, correcting the texts of four tragedies by Euripides and proposing numerous textual revisions.

イギリスの古典学者。庇護者の援助と奨学金により，イートン校からケンブリッジ大学トリニティ･カレッジに進み，1782年から10年間にわたり同カレッジのフェローを務めた。92年にはケンブリッジ大学ギリシア語教授に就任したが，晩年はロンドンに本拠を構えた。R.ベントリーを先達として仰ぎ，特にアッティカ古典期の悲劇，喜劇，散文の措辞と語法の厳密な検討に専念して，エウリピデスの悲劇4編のテキストを校訂するとともに，多数のテキスト修訂の提案を行った。
