1759‐1808 A British classical scholar. With the support of a patron and a scholarship, he went from Eton to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he served as a fellow for ten years from 1782. In 1792 he became professor of Greek at Cambridge, but in his later years he based himself in London. Following the example of R. Bentley, he devoted himself to a rigorous study of the phrasing and idiom of Attic classical tragedies, comedies, and prose, correcting the texts of four tragedies by Euripides and proposing numerous textual revisions.
