Choi Myeong-gil (English spelling)

A Confucian scholar and official of the Yi Dynasty in Korea. His pen name was Zi Qian, and his pen names were Chicheon and Canglang. He was from Jeonju. After passing his liberal arts degree, he became acquainted with Cho Ik and Chang Wei, and studied hard, even studying Yangmingism. He belonged to the Western faction, expelled Prince Gwanghae, and welcomed Injo along with the Jin dynasty. He subsequently held key positions. When the Later Jin (Qing) invaded, he advocated a more realistic view of peace, as opposed to the view of reconciliation advocated by Hong Ik Han and others, and led the peace process by proposing terms for surrender to the Qing. He excelled in writing, and created a style of calligraphy in the style of Dong Qichang. His works include Chicheonshu. His posthumous name was Bunchu. [Yamauchi Koichi]

朝鮮，李朝の文臣，儒者。字は子謙。号は遅川，滄浪。全州の人。文科に及第後，趙翼，張維らと交遊，学問に励み陽明学をも研究した。西人派に属して光海君を追放し，金らと仁祖を迎立，以後要職を歴任。後金(清)の侵入時には，洪翼漢などの斥和論に対して，現実重視の主和論を唱え，清に降服条件を打診するなど講和を主導した。文章に優れ，董其昌体の書をよくした。著書に《遅川集》などがある。諡号（しごう）は文忠。【山内弘一】
