Danbukuro - Danbukuro

Japanese:
Danbukuro - Danbukuro

The lower garment of the samurai training uniform. When the Tokugawa Shogunate was forced to open its ports to Western countries at the end of the Edo period, it realized that the traditional samurai uniform was non-combatant, and on August 22, leap year, 1862, a reform of the samurai uniform was carried out. At that time, the training uniform was changed to tsutsusode (long sleeves) and momohiki (lower pants), or tsutsusode (long sleeves) and tattsukebakama (sewn hakama). Furthermore, during the Keio period (1865-68), the lower garment was changed to thin hakama, and this Western-style thin hakama was called danbukuro. In other words, the upper garment of Japanese military uniform was called tsutsusode, and the lower garment was called danbukuro, and it was a hakama style with a waist string.
