Hosokawa Fujitaka

A military commander and cultural figure from the end of the Sengoku period to the beginning of the early modern period. The son of Mibuchi Harumoto and adopted son of Hosokawa Mototsune. He was known as Hyobu-daifu and Yuusai Genji. He was a member of Ashikaga Yoshiteru's entourage, but when Yoshiteru was killed by Matsunaga Hisahide and others, he supported his younger brother Ichijoin Kakukei (Yoshiaki). In 1568 (Eiroku 11), when Oda Nobunaga entered Kyoto, he fought bravely as a commander of the Ashikaga forces, and became the lord of Yamashiro Shoryuji Castle. When there was a rift between Yoshiaki and Nobunaga, he sided with Nobunaga and changed his surname to Nagaoka. After that, he mainly worked with Akechi Mitsuhide in the conquest of Tanba and Tango, and in 1580 (Tensho 8), he became the lord of Tango.

戦国末期～近世初頭の武将，文化人。三淵晴員の子で，細川元常の養子。兵部大輔，幽斎玄旨と号する。足利義輝の御供衆であったが，義輝が松永久秀らに殺されるにおよび，その弟一乗院覚慶(義昭)を擁立。1568年(永禄11)織田信長入京のときには足利軍の大将として奮戦，山城勝竜寺城城主となる。義昭と信長不和のときは信長にくみし，姓を長岡と改める。その後は，おもに明智光秀とともに丹波，丹後の攻略に当たり，80年(天正8)丹後の国主となる。
