Kato Bansai

Japanese: 加藤盤斎 - かとうばんさい

1621-1674 A scholar of Japanese classics in the early Edo period.
Born in the 7th year of the Genna era. He studied Tendai Buddhism on Mount Hiei, and later mastered Shintoism and Confucianism. In Kyoto, he studied Japanese classics, waka poetry, haiku, and linked verse under Matsunaga Teitoku, and devoted himself to annotating the classics. He passed away on August 11th, 1672. He was 54 years old. He was from Yamada, Settsu (Hyogo Prefecture). He was commonly known as Shintaro. His other pen names were Toku, Fuyukisai, and Tosetsuken. His works include "Shin Kokin Masu Sho" and "Irezuregusa Sho."

元和(げんな)7年生まれ。比叡(ひえい)山で天台をまなび,のち神道や儒学をおさめる。京都で松永貞徳に国学や和歌,俳諧(はいかい)・連歌をまなび,古典の注釈に力をそそいだ。延宝2年8月11日死去。54歳。摂津山田(兵庫県)出身。通称は新太郎。別号に等空,冬木斎,踏雪軒。著作に「新古今増抄」「徒然草抄」など。
