Born in the 7th year of the Genna era. He studied Tendai Buddhism on Mount Hiei, and later mastered Shintoism and Confucianism. In Kyoto, he studied Japanese classics, waka poetry, haiku, and linked verse under Matsunaga Teitoku, and devoted himself to annotating the classics. He passed away on August 11th, 1672. He was 54 years old. He was from Yamada, Settsu (Hyogo Prefecture). He was commonly known as Shintaro. His other pen names were Toku, Fuyukisai, and Tosetsuken.
