…The Mrityakatika is generally considered to have been written around 350-400, before the time of Kalidasa, but some say it was written much later, up to the 7th century. The play is the completion of the unfinished Cārudatta, attributed to Bhasa, and has as its central theme the love affair between the virtuous merchant Cārudatta and the virtuous courtesan Vasantasenā, but, unusually for classical Indian drama, it also contains elements of political and social drama. The courtroom scene in the ninth act is particularly famous, and the play also contains many other pieces of cultural and historical interest. …
