A village in Kunohe County in northeastern Iwate Prefecture. Population 3,701 (1995). Located at the northern end of the Kitakami Highlands, the town is almost entirely mountainous. The Heroi River and Enbetsu River originate from Mt. Hiraniwa in the southwest, flow northeast, and become the Kuji River. Gold dust was first extracted in Hinosawa in 1619 (Genwa 5), and in 1665 (Kanbun 5) gold was mined at the connected Fukada Gold Mine. From the Kanbun era (1661-73), the Nanbu clan operated a steelworks directly and the town prospered as a mining town. From the early Showa era, the town extracted a large amount of manganese, but after World War II, its prosperity declined rapidly due to the expansion of imports.
