Amawari - Amawari

Japanese:
Amawari - Amawari

A powerful anji in medieval Okinawa. Historical records say he was of peasant origin, but much of his background is unclear. As an anji of Katsuren, he built up a powerful force in the Katsuren area, fought against and defeated the anji of Nakagusuku, Gosamaru, and then attempted to take the throne of King Sho Taikyu of Shuri, but was defeated and destroyed (1458). Official histories from the early modern period portray him as a wicked and rebellious minister, but medieval "Omoro" sing of him as a virtuous and fearsome figure. Excavations at the ruins of Katsuren Castle, where he lived, unearthed rare items from China and other countries, revealing a glimpse of the prosperity of the past. Amawari's actions are seen as the final friction between powerful anji and royal authority in the development of the kingdom in Okinawa.
