Eschdorf

...That is to say, the most common settlements were not the densely-packed villages (Gewanndorf) of 20-30 houses that appeared clearly from the 8th and 9th centuries onwards, nor the scattered settlements (Einzelhof) in which each household had their own farmland around their house, but rather small, loosely-organized groups of clans or vassal families of 4-5 to at most 10 households. This is said to be suggested by the existence of small settlements called Drubbel or Eschdorf that survived to later times in various parts of northwestern Germany. In these settlements, along with long, striped common plots for the production of staple grains (various types of wheat), each house had its own vegetable garden that could be used individually.
