Koichi Hoshina

Japanese linguist. Born in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University in 1897 (Meiji 30). After working as an assistant and lecturer at the same university, he became a professor at Tokyo Higher Normal School (later Tokyo University of Literature and Science) and Tokyo University of Literature and Science (now University of Tsukuba), and became a professor emeritus at the same university in 1940 (Showa 15). Believing that the cause of the slump in Japanese language education was unresolved issues regarding the Japanese language, he devoted his life to Japanese language policies to improve the language. He served as the Ministry of Education's Chief Researcher on the Japanese Language and Secretary-General of the Cabinet Council on National Language, as well as being president of the magazine "Japanese Language Education" (1917-1940), and made numerous achievements in both theory and practice of Japanese language education. His major works include "The Essence of Japanese Linguistics" (1910), "The Essence of Japanese Language Teaching Methods" (1916), "A New History of Japanese Linguistics" (1934), "Keichu and Kana Usage" (1942), and "Fifty Years of the Japanese Language Problem" (1949).

国語学者。山形県米沢(よねざわ)市生まれ。1897年（明治30）東京帝国大学文科大学卒業。同大学助手、講師を経て、東京高等師範学校（後の東京文理科大学）、東京文理科大学（現、筑波(つくば)大学）教授、1940年（昭和15）退官、同大学名誉教授となる。国語教育不振の原因を国語問題の未解決にあるとみて、終生、国語改良のための国語政策に尽力した。文部省国語に関する調査主任嘱託、内閣国語審議会幹事長などを務めるとともに、雑誌『国語教育』（1917～1940）を主宰、国語教育のうえにも理論、実践両面にわたって数多くの業績を残した。主要著書に『国語学精義』（1910）、『国語教授法精義』（1916）、『新体国語学史』（1934）、『契沖と仮名遣(づかい)』（1942）、『国語問題五十年』（1949）などがある。
