In economics, a time lag means that when an economic phenomenon occurs, the reaction to it does not occur immediately, but occurs after a certain amount of time has passed. Important examples of time lags include (1) the consumption lag emphasized by DH Robertson (when income increases, households do not increase consumption immediately, but increase it after a certain amount of time has passed), (2) the production lag emphasized by E. Lundberg and LA Metzler (when sales increase, companies respond by reducing inventory for the time being, and increase production after some time has passed), and (3) the lag between investment plans and the execution of the investment (even if an investment plan is made and machinery is ordered, the machinery is not delivered immediately, so there is a lag between the investment plan and its realization).

経済学において，タイム･ラグとは，ある経済現象が起こったとき，それに対する反応が直ちに起こらず，ある時間を置いてから起こることをいう。タイム･ラグの重要な例としては，(1)D.H.ロバートソンが強調した消費ラグ(家計は所得が増加したとき，すぐには消費を増加させず，一定の時間がたってから増加させる)，(2)E.ルンドバーグやL.A.メツラーが強調した生産のラグ(販売量の増加に対して，企業は当座は在庫を減らすことによって対処し，生産の増加はしばらくたってから行う)，(3)投資計画と投資の実行の間のラグ(投資計画を立て機械等を発注しても，すぐには機械等の受渡しは行われないため，投資計画とその実現の間にはラグがある)，等があげられる。
