According to him, it is necessary to make the contents of esoteric teachings public, especially in this day and age when material civilization has become too one-sided. Anthroposophy answers this need by mediating between anthropology and theosophy, or between science and spiritual knowledge, and aims to develop the higher cognitive abilities that lie dormant within all human beings, and to present methods that will be useful for the self-realization of individuals and the progress of society. In 1923, Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society and the Free University for Spiritual Science (both with headquarters in the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland), and attempted to create an organization with a public character similar to that of general academic societies, while inheriting the esoteric teachings of the previous secret societies. Currently, the society has departments for education, social issues, art, medicine, natural science, agriculture, etc., and is widespread mainly in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK, and North America, and also carries out social movements such as the Camphill Community Village for the Handicapped, which was started in Scotland by Karl König (1902-66). *Some of the terminology referenced in the "General Anthroposophical Society" is listed below. …
