Japanese: 語り - かたり

A term used in Japanese music and theater. It is an abbreviation of "monogatari" (narrative), and is used to narrate a narrative story in a monologue or dialogue, and in musical terms, it takes the form of a recitation. (1) In Noh, it is also the name of a structural unit, and is written in prose, not in korōbun (storytelling), but it is often used by waki (supporting actors), and in that case korōbun may be mixed in. (2) In Kyogen, it refers to a monologue-style narration that is different from the normal lines, and the "katariai" (narration interval) in aikyōgen (interlude) is one such type. The "Nasu" narration, which is an alternate interlude in "Yashima," is famous. (3) In shamisen music, "katari" is used as a part name mainly in Bungo-style period kyogen jōruri, and is also used in jōruri-style nagauta. (4) In Kabuki, a summary written in a beautiful style above the main title on the signboard or banzuke.

日本音楽，演劇の用語。物語の略で，叙事的な内容を独白的または対話的に物語ることで，音楽的には朗誦形式をとる。 (1) 能では構成単位名称でもあり，候文でない散文体だが，ワキの演じどころであることが多く，その場合候文が混ることがある。 (2) 狂言において普通のせりふと異なる独白形式で物語る部分をいい，間狂言 (あいきょうげん) の「語り間 (かたりあい) 」もこの一種。『屋島』の替の型の間の『那須』語りが有名。 (3) 三味線音楽では，主として豊後系の時代狂言浄瑠璃に部分名称としての「語り」があり，長唄でも浄瑠璃的なものには転用されている。 (4) 歌舞伎で，看板や番付の本名題の上に，概要を美文調で書いたもの。
