Paramecium (Japanese sandal worm) - Paramecium caudatum

Japanese: ゾウリムシ(草履虫) - ゾウリムシ(英語表記)Paramecium caudatum
Paramecium (Japanese sandal worm) - Paramecium caudatum
A protozoan of the family Paramecium, class Holtica, subphylum Ciliata (illustration). The English name "slipper animacule" comes from the fact that its body shape resembles a shallow-soled indoor shoe, and the Japanese name is the same. It is commonly found in ponds, swamps, and puddles. Its body is spindle-shaped and 170-290 μm long. Its front end is rounded and its rear end is pointed and conical. Its entire surface is densely covered with cilia, the latter of which is long and looks like a bundle. Its ventral surface has an oral groove about half the length of its body, through which microbial food such as bacteria is taken into the body via the cytopharynx.
