Ooichimonji (English spelling) Popular Admiral

This butterfly belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Nymphalidae. It is widely distributed from Europe to northern East Asia, and in Japan it is found in the mountains of Hokkaido, and in the Chubu and Kanto regions of Honshu, at altitudes of about 1,000 to 2,500 meters. Its wingspan is about 120 millimeters. Its upper surface is blackish brown with several white spots on the forewings and a white stripe running down the center of the hindwings. Its underside is even more beautiful than the upper surface, with orange spots. It appears once a year, from late June to mid-August, but its peak is in early to late July. Adults visit flowers, and males often descend to the ground to absorb water. The larvae feed on plants of the Salicaceae family, such as poplar and aspen, and overwinter as third-instar larvae, eating off the leaves of the host plant to build a unique overwintering nest about 10 millimeters long, in which they hide.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目タテハチョウ科に属するチョウ。ヨーロッパから東アジアの北部にかけて広く分布し、日本では北海道の山地、本州では中部地方、関東地方のおおよそ1000～2500メートルの標高の高地に産する。はねの開張120ミリメートル内外。表面は黒褐色で前ばねに数個の白斑(はくはん)、後ろばねには中央を走る白帯がある。裏面では橙色(とうしょく)斑が現れ、表面よりさらに美しい。年1回発生し、6月下旬から8月中旬にみられるが、その最盛期は7月上旬から下旬である。成虫は花を訪れるほか、雄は吸水のために地上に降りることが多い。幼虫の食草はドロノキ、ヤマナラシなどのヤナギ科植物で、3齢幼虫で越冬するが、その際には食草の葉を食い切って長さ10ミリメートルほどの特異の越冬巣をつくり、その中に潜んでいる。
