A cloth used to wrap things. It was found in the treasures of the Shosoin Repository during the Nara period, and was called koromo tsutsumi or hiratsume during the Heian period. The sketch in the Senmen Koshakyo (Ancient Fan-Shaped Sutra) shows a person wearing a hiratsume on his head. The word furoshiki first appeared in documents in the Sunpu Gobunbutsu Godogucho (Cabinet of Sunpu Bunbutsu), a record of Tokugawa Ieyasu's distribution of keepsakes, and it became common at the beginning of the Edo period. The name is said to have come from the fact that it was (1) laid on the floor of a bath (steam bath), (2) used as a foot wipe after a bath, and (3) wrapped in clothing to distinguish it from others.
