For a machined part to take shape, in addition to the deviation in the shape of the lines and surfaces that are its components, that is, shape deviation, the relationship between these features is often also an issue. When machining, for example, a certain plane of the part is used as a reference to determine the direction and orientation of the machining, and the target surface is machined, and when measuring, the deviation in the direction and orientation of the target surface is determined based on that reference plane. When specifying that reference on a drawing, a theoretically accurate geometric reference is considered. This is called a datum.

機械加工部品が形をなすためには，その構成要素である線，面そのものの形体の狂い，すなわち形状偏差のほかに，それら形体の相互間の関係を問題とすることも多い。機械加工を行うとき，例えば部品のある平面を基準として加工の方向や姿勢を決めて対象とする面を加工し，測定では，その基準とした平面をもとに対象とする面の方向や姿勢の狂いを求めている。その基準を図面で指示するとき，理論的に正確な幾何学的基準を考える。これをデータムdatumと呼ぶ。
