A scholar of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea, who was a brilliant scholar of the Northern School of Practical Learning. His pen name was Jishoo, and his pen name was Chojeong or Jeongjae. He was from Miryang and studied under Park Jiwon. He was also skilled in poetry, calligraphy, and painting, and was highly trusted by King Jeongjo, who selected him as a scribe for the newly established Gyujanggak in 1776 along with Yi Deok-mo, Yu Deok-gong, and Seo Ri-soo, making them known as the Four Clerks. After returning from a trip to Beijing accompanying the Yan Clan Expedition in 1778, he wrote the Northern Learning Discussion, in which he closely observed the Qing Dynasty's sericulture, livestock farming, castles, palaces, boats, carriages, and brick-making methods, and advocated the "utilization and welfare" of learning from them.

朝鮮,李朝時代の学者で実学の北学派の俊秀。字は次修。号は楚亭または貞蕤。密陽の人。朴趾源に師事する。詩文や書画にもすぐれていたが,正祖の信任厚く,1776年に新設された奎章閣の検書官として,李徳懋(りとくぼう),柳得恭,徐理修とともに抜擢され,これを四検書という。78年の燕行使に随行した北京旅行から帰国して《北学議》を著し,清国の農蚕,牧畜,城郭,宮室,舟車から甓(煉瓦)の製法にいたるまで仔細に観察し,それから学ぶことによる〈利用・厚生〉を説いた。
