Agnolo Bronzino

Agnolo Bronzino

Italian painter. Born in Monticelli near Florence, he died in Florence. He first studied under Raffaellino del Garbo, but later became a pupil of Pontormo. He became independent around 1528. He was invited to the court of Urbino, where he participated in the decoration of the Villa Imperiale in Pesaro (1530-32). After returning to Florence, he worked as Pontormo's assistant in the decoration of the Collegiate and the cloister of the Medici villa in Castello (1535-43). He also distinguished himself as a portrait painter, and around 1540 he became the court painter of Cosimo I. He painted many portraits, including the masterpiece of Mannerist portraiture, "Eleonora da Toledo with her son Giovanni" (Uffizi Gallery, around 1545). His style exudes austere and noble elegance with its cold sense of color and precise depiction. After his stay in Rome from 46 to 47, he produced many religious paintings, but they are lacking in brilliance. His other works include the famous allegorical Allegory of Time and Love (c. 1546, National Gallery, London).
